Sketching

After looking at my research and various pictures for inspiration I concluded that in my design I want to incorporate the shape of a swan and black feathers.

To start with I decided to start with sketching some ideas of shapes so I started looking at various sketches and drawings of swans:

From the pictures I looked at I created an abstract shape that looks like a swan and this was my first step :

Then I re did it neatly and ellabaroted it by trying to incorporate the effects of the black feathers for it to take shape.
This was my final sketch of the shape :

In some way I would like to incorporate this kind of shape to represent the black swan in my design.

Design Concept

My choice for my concept design was fashion design as I got really inspired by the elegance of my chosen film the Black Swan. My first attempt was to brainstorm and look up different ideas and designs that in some way relate to what I will be focusing on. Seeing as the Main element I focused on was Harmony I tried to look at designs which were flowing and loose not tight and geometrical.
I read through all my blog posts and highlighted some key words which I thought would help me with my design.

Various keywords to help me research :

These are some designs that I looked at for inspiration:

Black Swan Ballerina by Barry J Davis

Oil painting on black canvas.

As a young child Barry showed alot of talent in his drawings and at the age of 12 he sold his first painting.
He also painted portraits of people and animals while looking to attend an art school. Due to lack of support  from his family he spent two years trying out different jobs but eventually he began painting for local galleries by day and playing with various bands at night.
During the mid 80's he eventually became a full-time artist , producing realistic paintings.

"Barry has never held a solo exhibition mainly because his work sells before he can amass enough pieces together to exhibit,"
I really like this painting because it shows alot of passion , it has very good balance, different shades and tones. When looking at it, it doesn't necessarily give you a relaxed emotion as her facial expression shows fierceness but as a painting regarding colour, balance etc it is very harmonious.

Reflections by Bonnie Hamlin

Acrylic on Canvas

Bonnie Hamlin taught art to children and also held workshops for art teachers.
She also illustrated children's books and did cartoons for rural newspapers, now she works full time from in her studio. Her art knowledge shows in the depth, movement and life she brings to her paintings.

I really like this painting because of the cool relaxing colors, it is very harmonious. I also really like how the swan stands out from the rest of the image.

I chose a painting of a swan to relate to the choice of my film so I can relate Film, Design and Art together.

"A Wheatfield with Cypresses" Van Gogh 1889

In 1889 Van Gogh painted this while he was in the St-Rémy mental asylum.
This painting is considered as one of his most famous pieces.
Van Gogh loved the countryside and he searched for the beauty in the simplest of things.

In this painting Van Gogh is using wavy lines / brush strokes and organic shapes. The directional movement is very vague as I see it as it doesn't lead you to any specific points but it shows movement all throughout and your eyes don't only stop on one part. It is also quite balanced. I think the center of interest in this painting is the sky because of it being abit abstract compared to the rest of the painting. Colors used are basically primary colors

"Black Swan"

SYNOPSIS:
Black Swan is a supernatural thriller, which centers the story of Nina, a ballerina in a New York City ballet whose life is consumed with dance. She lives with her mother Erica who supports her daughter’s professional ambition. When the director Thomas Leroy decides to replace prima ballerina Beth for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. Nina has competition a new dancer, Lily , who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers compete against each other into a twisted friendship, Nina gets more in touch with her dark side which later destroys her.

ELEMENTS:
Many indirect references to trauma-based mind control can be found in Nina’s living environment. Her Mum, Erica acts more as a mind-controller than a mother. She obviously has boundary issues and is very controlling over all aspects of Nina’s life. Nina’s mother, undresses her adult daughter. This is a very unsettling scene  as it hints unhealthy sexual familiarity between the two. Symbols relating to mind control in Nina’s house, such as her pink, childlike bedroom reflect this reality.

Playing the Black Swan is a role that requires the dancer to be twisted, sexual and dangerous. Nina had a very frigid character and wasn’t suitable to potray the Black Swan, but Thomas chooses her anyway as he believes she has it in her and that he will bring it out by creating in Nina a new, agressive and sexual alter-ego. He therefore becomes Nina’s new mind-controller.

At one point in the movie Nina is dressed in white and crosses the path of another Nina dressed in black. This represents the rising of Nina’s dark alter-ego. While this is happening Nina hallucinates of strange scars on her body which represent the coming out of the Black Swan in her.

The story of Nina in the film can be compared to many real life cases of celebrities as after being pressured by the industry to become a superstar, they are suddenly dropped and forgotten sometimes leading them to psychological damage, depression, drugs, alcoholism and even suicide.

SYMBOLS:

The power of the Black Swan is represented by black wings in different stages of the movie.
In the scene where Nina is talking to Beth shortly after she is crowned Swan Queen, Nina is fascinated by a creepy statue which shows a dark figure of a man with wings. This figure represents what she is turning into, the Black Swan.

Tattooed Black wings on Lilys back are shown in many parts of the film but show meaning in the scene where she is pleasuring Nina. The tattooed wings represent the power of the Black Swan which is becoming one with Nina. It is comparing Lily and the power of the black swan / her passion which is dance as they are both penetrating her, giving her orgasm, but also taking over her life.

At the end of Ninas perfect performance as the Black Swan she is shown with black wings, symbolizing that she has now become one with the Black Swan.

Thomas and all the audience are in love with Nina as the Black Swan as she gave the performance of a lifetime, but they aren’t in love with the real Nina they’re in love with what she has now become. However the person she has now become is destructive and she cannot live with it tormenting her  physically and psychologically and not able to go on Nina freed herself by killing herself.

PERSONAL COMMENTS:

  • The film started out with very dark setting accompanied with suspicious music and heavy breaths. Then it changed into a harmonious scene with light colours such as pinks and whites and a very calm setting. This was constantly happening in the film, a conflicting dark scene followed by a harmonious calm scene repeated throughout the film.
  • The camera focused alot on the feet the sounds were very detailed and clear.
  • During the film there were many indirect references to the Black Swan, one of them was that she was always wearing light colours and whites while Lily who represented the Black Swan was always wearing black.
  • Nina seems to be mentally unstable because her mother is constantly taking care of her and seems to be treating her like a child.
  • Nina has a very soft character but throughout the film she is transforming into this dark character.
  • Ninas mum was very overpowering.
  • Near the end she starts showing more facial expressions when at the beginning she always had the same look on her face.
  • At the end Nina starts talking more and stands up for herself rather then staying quite in whatever situation.

“Dress in aluminium discs” Paco Rabanne 1966

Paco Rabanne born in Spain was recognized in 1971 as a couturier and retired 30 years later in 1999. He liked to experiment with strange and different recycled materials to stand out, adapting them for his own use. Some examples are hammered metal, knitted fur, aluminum jersey, dresses made from paper or fluorescent leather or fiber glass. He is one of the most unique and innovative designers.

This dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Two For Road in 1967 was featured in the Maserati and Paco Rabanne Exhibition Hosted in Paris.

It is the transforming of different materials used in new and fresh designs that made this dress.

In this design we can see Harmonious structures throughout the dress. The square/rectangle aluminium discs are linked by chains making the dress whole. The pattern of the dress is not the same throughout. Starting from the top, the aluminium discs are getting bigger. We also see some aluminium circles on certain discs which are all following the structure of a diagonal line.

Although as a whole it is a very harmonious design , when comparing it to normal pieces of clothing made out of fabric it is very conflicting as it does not meet up to the function of clothes such as comfort as it is very stiff.

This design by Manish Arora is an interpretation of the original piece by Paco Rabanne. This one is longer and the fit is very different because in this design the discs aren't all the same shape following the same pattern, in this design they are all different shapes as to fit the body structure nicely. This design is organic compared to the original piece by Paco Rabanne which is geometric.

Autumn Harmony by Leonard Holland

autumn harmony. (n.d.). Retrieved November 19, 2012, from fine art america: http://fineartamerica.com/featured/autumn-harmony-leonard-holland.html

This is a very harmonious piece of art. When you look at it you can almost hear the water flowing and birds chirping. The colors used are a very essential part in making it harmonious. Although there is a mixture of warm and cold colors it is not conflicting as the way both of them blend in together makes it whole.
The technique used is also very important. The red "leaves" falling down from the tress if looked at closely one can see that they aren't detailed painted leaves but they seem to be random splodges or very short brush strokes.

Organic Camera

I find this design very interesting as it's very creative and also it is very detailed.
I do not know whether to classify this as harmonious or conflicting because the way I see it, it has a bit of both. The colors used are very harmonious as they are different tones and hues of two complimentary colors, blue and orange. This design could also classify as conflicting because organic materials are being transformed to re create man made inorganic designs.

I found this blog very interesting as it shows immense creativity of how things can be re-created with different materials.
